Retailers face a number of unique human resources challenges due to their geographical reach across provincial boundaries and the direct relationship that they have with their customers.

Hicks Morley has helped a number of retail clients integrate their human resources policies and strategies across the country to ensure consistency and compliance on key workplace issues such as part-time employment, hours of work, Sunday and holiday scheduling, attendance management and pensions. We also provide advice and representation on human rights issues relating to both employees and to customers in their interactions with loss prevention officers.

Employee representation is also a key issue in the retail sector, and we advise our clients on union organizing issues and, where a workplace is unionized, provide advice and representation during the collective bargaining process.

With the move to multinational retailing by many companies, change is a constant theme and much of our work involves helping clients with change management issues relating to the restructuring or sale of a business. When issues cannot be resolved, our litigation expertise has helped our retail clients in a number of individual and class action lawsuits relating to restructuring and hours of work issues.
